GALLIPOLI MUDDLE
SIS lAN HAMILTON CRITICISED. ;By Cable—Press Association.— Copyright.) (United Scrvice.) LONDON, Mnv 31. General Sir John Maxwell, formerly Commander-in-Chief in Egypt, writing in the "Standard" regarding GaLipoli, snvs: "Lord Kitchener ordered me to give General Sir lan all tho men ho asked for. I did so. Time and again I sent mv best troops, and denuded Egypt to copo with the demands. 1 thereby took great risks, lmowing thei danger of an attack on tho Suez Canal, which was finally left with one completo formation of Yeomanry. "Sir lan Hamilton got the pick or the Australians. When he states that I refused a brigade of Gurkhas, I merely reply that there was no such brigade." As regards Sir lan Hamilton's statement that the Administrative Staff had not reached Mudros at the time planned for the landing, Sir John Maxwell characterises it as an amazing admission. The work of dealing with tho sick and wounded, and with water supplies and ammunition was the concern of the Administrative Staff. The General Staff was concerned with tho fighters only. Sir John Maxwell adds that the Gnllipoli campaign failed in great park owing to the impasse over tho sick and wounded, and the lack of water.
