CITY COUNCIL BY-ELECTION.
ME E. F. STEAD ELECTED. The election of a city councillor to fill the vacancy caused by tho death of Mr "William Nicholls took place yesterday, and resulted in an easy win for Mr Edgar F. Stead, the Citizens' Association's candidate, by a majority of 293 over the combined votes cast for Messrs C. Renn (Labour) and R. Hoppy (Independent). Mr Stead's majority over Mr R-enn was 381 and over Mr Hoppy G62.
The polling was not heavy, only 1192 valid votes being cast. _ Mr Stead secured substantial majorities at all the booths with the exception of three —Mr Renn scoring 93 at the Foresters' Hall to Mr Stead's 81; at the corner of Madras and Aberdeen streets Mr Renn secured 25 to Mr Stead's 14, and at the Methodist school, Stanmore road, Mr Renn obtained 47 to Mr Stead's 40. At the tramway shelter Mr Stead secured 231 to Mr Renn's 58, and Mr Hoppy's 10; and. at the Art Gallery Mr Stead scored 133 to Mr Renn's 28 and Mr Hoppy's 4.
The result of the poll was as follows: E. F. Stead ... ... 745 C. Renn ... ... 384 R. Hoppy ... ... 83 Mr Albert Freeman was the returnins officer, had the complete results in by 7.30 p.m.
