MR LONGWORTH FAREWELLED.

— In spito of .the inclement weather, a representative gathering of inspectors and teachers met on Saturday inorning to say farewell to Mr H. E. Longworth, who has recently been appointed Chief Physical Instructor for the Dominion. Mr V/. C. Colee, president of tlie /North Canterbury Educational Instotute, presided, and read several apologies, for absence, including one from the chairman of tho Canterbury Education Board. Mr W. Brock, Chief Inspector, in congratulating Mr Longworth on his promotion, said that the* success of tho schcme of physical instruction had been due to Mr Longworth, who, by his tact and genial personality had gained not only the respect but the friendship of all Canterbury tcacliers. He had proved himself not only a successful inutructor, but in his relations with the teachers had shown himself to be a man in every sense of the term. The inspectors wished him every success in his new sphero of labour. Mr J. A. Valentine and Mr T. W. Ambrose also spoke, conveying to Mr Longworth the best wishes of the South Canterbury, A Vest Coast, and North Canterbury teachers. Mr Colee,' in asking Mr Longworth to accept from the teachers in tho Canterbury Education District a handsome case of i-ustless cutlery, emphasised the revitalising influence of Mr Long-worth's visits in the work of physical instruction in the primary schools. His tact and outstanding personality had won over teachers to tho new system, and ]iis readiness to assist them in their work had made the teachers regard him ps one of themselves. Mr Longworth, who on rising to reply was received "with cheers and musical honours, expressed his gratitude to the teachers for the many kindnesses he had received at their hands. It was gratifying to find that his efforts had been so appreciated. He urged the teachers to mi press on their pupils the importance of striving after physical fitness, without which success in any lino was impossible.
