OBITUARY.
MR D. STKWABT.

WELLINGTON, April 19. It was quite a shock to the commercial community hero to-day to learn of tho death of Mr D. btewait, who only a few weeks ago retired from the local management of the Union Bank of Australia. Mr Stewart was born in Scotland, and began his career in the City of Glasgow Bank. He came to New Zealand in 1877, and in 1899 was manager of the Union Bank in l>unedin. He was a keefti golfer, and last yoar was captain of the Wellington Club. He had to undergo a serious operation, which, however, could not be successfully performed. Ho leaves a widow and folir children. One son served in the great war. The death is announced of Mr William Georgo Rankin, of Inglewood Farm, Southland, who was noted throughout Australasia as a breeder of Ayrshire cattle. There cjied at Invercnrgill on Sunday, a New Zealand writer on matters pastoral, in tho person of Mr John Ross Macdonald of the Lands and Survey Office. Mr Macdonald some time back produced a book on "Sheepfarming in New Zealand." Shortly prior to bis death he had arranged for the publica- : tion of a book entitled, "Sheepfarming in Australia and New Zealand." This boolr is now in tho press. Mr Macdonald had a considerable length of service in his particular department.
