TIMARU WITHOUT STREET LIGHTS.
« ATTACK ON CHINESE FRUIT SHOPS. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) TIMARU, April 18. Several letters have appeared in the local newspapers protesting against custom being given to Chinese fruiterers under cover of darkness, due to the eleotric street lights being cut off. Last night a small crowd wrecked, more or loss, four Chinese shops, in some cases breaking the plate-glass windows. No arrests were made, in the darkness it being impossible to see where the missiles (fruit and vegetables from the shops) came from. The streets have been without lights for several nights, owing to both the gas producer and the steam plants going wrong at the same time, only a little power and some domestic light being available from a small combined steam engine and dynamo. It is hoped that the big steam engine will be re-1 stored to duty to-night.
