CONCILIATION COUNCIL
$ METAL WO3JKEKS' DISPUTE. 'Iho Conciliation Council met yesterday to hear the Canterbury District Metalworkers' Assistants' dispute, brought by the Christchurch branch of' the Amalgamated Society of Engineers against various employers. The Commissinoer (Mr W. H. Hagger) presided. Tho Union's assfscors were Messrs R. F. Barter, G. T. Thurston, ar.'l J. J. Toy, and tho employers', Jlesffrs F. l r . V.'. Anderson, and C. J. Whitaker. The Union askod for tb-o same conditions as agreed to in the general engineers' di»puta before the Council last Thursday, and the following minimum wuges:—Furnaoemen, ,1s per hour; boilermakera' assistants, strikers, and fettlers, 2s lOd per hmir; nil other clnsaee of workers, 3s 9d per hour; foreman, us per day extra, and chargemen 2s Gd per day extra; boys under 15 years cf age, £1 5s per week; 15 to 1G years, JEI 10s; ycut-hs 16 to 17 years, £1 17s Gd; 17 to 18 ye<irs. A''- ss; 18 to 19 years, £2 12s Gd; 19 to 20 years, £3 10s.
An agreement was arrived at covering the conditions asked for, and fixing the following as the minimum wages:—Furnacemen, work on ships or marine boiler repair work, and mac!iini=;tfl not covered by any other award, Is 9£d i«er hour, with 3d per hour bonus; all other workers, Is 7!d and Eu bonus. Xo special provision was made for foremen or chargemen. It was decide! to pay boj*3 nnder 15 years of age 18s per week, between .13 and 16 £1 4#, 17 and 3S £■2, IS and 19 £2 10s, 19 and 20 £3, plus a bonus cf 2s per week in every case. It was arranged that the award come into force on April 16th nest, and continue in operation for one • year.
