THE LYTTELTON SEAT.
ro th:: editor ok "tujc cress." Sir, —From your remarks this morn- ] ing, it is very evident mat you aiV louowing the campaign lor the l.vttelton seat with nose iiuere>t. Votir ' view of the lU'lonu Party's chances will, I hope, lie Uio cause til disposing of that element- of doubt which has ox- , isted, and may still exist, in tho minds ■ of certain of the party's supporters. In their anxiety tor tho welfare of tho country, tho Kelorm Party j supporters have, since tho commencement of tho war, been of one mind as far as .Air MeCombs is coneorned, and everywhere ono hoars the expressed de- | termination to put him out. The advent oi throe other candidates caused much concern, and until tfie contest had proceeded soim> distance, many votes romainod in the air. Mac- . artney't? excoilent showing, his ingrain- ( ed hone.-.ty, his practical experience and i capabilities have, however, been bo j great an asset, that he has reduced the | doubting few to a minimum. | lie has obtained tho support of many I well-known electors whoso vote Ims never beforo gone to tho Heform Party, and this support is iu many cases duo to tho fact that those who havo gone closely into the question have but ono opinion, and tliat is that Mr McComos can only be beaten by one man in this con test, anil that tho man is Macartney. This candidate hns broken much fresh ground, and has surprised even himself with his efforts, lie has obtained much support lrom all classes which was never given to Mr Miller in his contests, and it will lw very regrettable indeed if, after his successful work in this direction, he cannot absolutely depend upon the rote of every Jleform supporter in the electorate. 'iou say that if he obtains this his election is absolutely certain, and after travelling every portion of tho electorate I must say that I most heartily agreo with you.—Yours, etc., "STICK TO YOUR GUNS."
