THE LYTTELTON SEAT.

TO THE EDITOR OP "XH* P*JBS." Sir, —Your correspondent, "Resident of Ciishmcre," bit the nail squarely on the hond. in his lottor in Saturday's paper. Without a doubt the issue bore lies between Messrs Macartney and McOombs. ' Sumner, Aknroa, Cashmere, Jtodcliffs, and id] the Peninsula booths will giro Robert Macartney a thumping majority, and the only question is whether this margin will be sufficient to balance the Red Fod vote in Woolston. T consider that the issue lies to a great extent with tho moderate Liberals in Opawa. Mr Macartney had a splendid meeting hero on Saturday night, and at its close I heard such remarks as, "I can't vote for McOombs. and if I think Macartney will win I will voto for him." "Sow, surely the Lyttelton Liberals inust realise the utter hopelessness of , either Messrs Ell's or Lester's chances iof defeating Mr McOombs. Outside 1 ihe town of Lyttelton Mr Lester will poll a mere sprinkling of votes, although these votes will very largely be off Mr McCombs's total last election. The real reason of Air Ell leaving Ohristchnrch South electorate for Lvttolton is well known, and surely Mr Ell must realise that his prospects for 'this election anyway are down to zero. The moral is very clear. An electors <>f Lyttelton who are reallv sincere in ■their wish to rid the electorate of Mr McCombs, should voto solidly for Robert Macartney.—Yonw," etc., OPAWA LIBERAL.

to Twii mbitok «» "nri rmtM ** Sir, —Tonr correspondent, "Cashmere Hill* Resident," Ipays me a poor compliment, and yon, Sir, in yonr leader, repent it in more pointed terms, when von stipgebt that 1 be found a position i" th" Public Scrvieo. Let me here say, Sir, for your information., and for the information of your correspondent, that .1 hnvo 110 intention of deserting the work for which I have laboured now for many of tho best years of my life, Jor any position in tho Public Scrvico. -Yours, etc., H. G. ELL.
