COMPLAINTS AGAINST PLUNKET

T ____ I j The Royal (N.Z.) Society for the j 9 Health of Women and Children; popularly known as the Plunket Society, 5 held a fair in Cathedral square last week in aid of its funds. Last evenl ing the City Council's By-laws Com- . mittee reported to the Council that it 7 regretted that the Society did not com- - ply with the conditions under which ; permission was grunted to erect tents r in tho Square, and the committee recommended tint the public be reminded that no permits for street sales to [ be held after November Ist next would be granted, th.> Council haying already I carried a resolution to this effect. The report was adopted. [ Reference to the matter was made f>y ! councillors later in tho evening, the . Deputy-Mayor (Cr. J. W. Beanland) ' stating that the way the tarred macadam in the Square had been brokon i by the erection of tonts was herirtL breaking. Other councillors referred to , tho Socioty cutting people off from the I water supply, and blocking traffic. , Cr. Flesher stated that the Council's . McKellar said the Plunket Fete j . I officials had received a letter allowing s 1 : them to erect the tents in the manner! [ they had. The letter came from some 5 official of the Council, but who it was f he did not know. I It was decided to hunt up the copy > of the letter. < [ The Deputy-Mayor said the Coramer--5 cial Travellers had been granted pef- - mission to make a street appeal on i . October 17th, and the Navy League, ■ which had been granted permission byt the Council to make a street" appeal oil ;, October 22nd, and erect tents in the , Square, asked for permission to IIOW . same on October 31st. Cr. Flesher moved that, the Nary , League's request be granted. > [ Tho Deputv-Mayor thought some different plan should be adopted in regjard , to the erection of tents. He also paid > the Progress League wished to conduct . a. street membership campaign on Wedi riesday and Friday, October 22nd'and i 24th. Some discussion ensued as to whether i the Progress League campaign would' , not clash .with the Navy League?s • ap- . peal, and therefore should be ■ posti poned, but the Council cam© to the : ' conclusion that it would not, mfidl grant- , e<l the request, and also that;of tho ■ Navy League. i At this stage tho Town Clerk, appeared with a letter addressed. to Mrs • i Bristed, hon. secretary of tltic* Plunket Society, stating that the Mayor had granted permission to the Society to ] hold the fete and erect stal7s' and tenta in Cathedral square . subjqci to their ! being erected under tlio supervision of the motor inspector and to his satisfaction. Cr. Hunter: Now read /the motor inspector's report. Cr Flesher said it wan only fair to state that the inspector had reported that his instructions had "been very far exceeded by the organisation in question. . Cr. Hunter said ho tVftnted an assurance from the By-law? Committee that they would take steps to se-o that the Navy League did not;*enceed their'perftlit. Cr. Flesher gave ihb required assurance, and tho mattdr. ended. - : /
