The plans for Dr. Cope's Antarctic expedition include a Bearch for coal, go»U. and precious stones, exploration of tho mountains and circumnavigation of tno continent. i\ir Jiarnt-st Joyce wiu be second in command, and Mr Huriey will act as photograpiier. The equipment includes an aeroplane. Dr. Cope declares that the climato is more favourable, and tho commercial possibilities greater than either tho Jvlondyke or Siberia. Captain Scott's ship has been acquired for the expedition. Mr J. F. Hurley was tho official war photographer with the Australian Forces during the war. He was educated fit Sydney University, qualifying as an electrical instrument designer and engineer.» He accompanied Sir Douglas Mawson on the Australian Antaretic Expedition, 1911-14, and sledged to the South Magnetic Polo. He was also on tho staff of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Imperial Antarctic Expedition, 1914-17. Mr Ernest Joyce was a member of Scott's first expedition, and has many friends in Lyttelton and Christohurch.
