QUEENSLAND BRANCH ON
STRIKE.
(By Cabl«.—PreM Association.—Copyright.) (Au*tr«lian and N.Z. Cable Associativa.) (Received May 11th, 5.5 p.m.)
BRISBANE, May 10. The epidemic has brought the shipping trouble, which has been brewing for some time, io a head. At the time of the 2s ew Zealand visitation, the crews manning vessels trading to infected ports were granted special rates, but owing to the shipping companies refusing to concede these rates, the Queensland branch of the Federated Seamen's Union has declared a strike on the whole Queensland coast, and an appeal has been made for support in the southern States. It is feared here and in the other States that the trouble will extend throughout Australia, as unrest amongst the seamen is general. The strike has rendered idle a number of inter-colonial steamers, which, however will be allowed to return to their home ports.
