CASUALTIES.
INFANT KILLED. On Saturday morning a distressing accident occurred in Oashel street, as a result of which an infant only three months old was fatally injured. Tho baby, whoso name was Myrtle Lily Rathgen, was in a trap with her parents, Mr and Mrs Rathgen, of Tai Tapu; tho horso fell on tho slippery street, and tho occupants of the trap were thrown out. The baby foil close to the horse, which, in its struggles, rolled on and crushed the child, who died shortly after admittance to the Christchurch Hospital. Mrs Rathgen was also cut about the head. At an inquest held yesterday, before Mr S. E. McCarthy, district coroner, a verdict of accidental death was returned. SUICIDE. Mr S.. E. McCarthy, District Coroner, held an inquest yesterday touching the death of Geo. Walton Ball, a married man residing at 271 Milton street, who was found at 5 p.m. on Saturday hanging at the back of a door in his sitting-room. The evidence disclosed the fact that deceased had been peculiar for some time, and had threatened to do away with himself more than once. A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned. (press association telegrams.) AUCKLAND, April 26. Walter Edes, who was recently injured in a lift accident, died in the hospital last night. OPOTIKI, April 26. A serious motoring accident occurred at 2 o'clock this morning on tho Hikutaia road, in the vicinity of tho borough. A car containing five well-known residents, and driven by C. Gordon, took a wrong turning and capsized over a bank. Gordon was rendered unconscious. Tabb had one car almost torn off. R. W. Wise had his left ai'm broken near tho shoulder. P. Bridger had several ribs broken, and C. D. Cook sustained minor injurios. The men were taken to the hospital. According to l.itest advices, Gordon is still unconecious. WELLINGTON. April 27. John Riddall, while sitting on the rail of tho balcony at the Carlton Hotel. V. illis street, yestordny, overbalanced nnd fell to the street, and died shortly afterwards. Ho was a marriod man. While three men were hoisting coal at the Gns Company's works at Miramnr vo.cterd^y, the rmne overturned and foil.
