A BIG PROBLEM.
THE MEAT TRUST MENACE. Producers in New Zealand will bo interested to read the following note from the "Westminster Gazette" of February 22nd last, on the working of tho Meat Trust: — 'Tho explanations of tho Food Controller about the transactions with the American Meat Trust would be absolutely convincing if we had no knowledge of other facts. Tho picture painted for us is that of a Government Dennitaent squeezing down prices and making good bargains. Whence, then, came the enormous profits—far beyond tho most golden droavns of tho packers before tho war—that have been made by the ! Trust ? The simple fact is, and no j amount of official explanation will alter. I it, that in tho dealings with the Government the Meat Trust alwnvs had the ! upper hand. It commanded supplies j and held the Allied Government to ran- \ som. That fact is fully set out in tho ! report of an investigation ordered by ! the President of the United States. ] Why, then, should the Food Controller's ■ Department be so anxious to conceal I the truth ? The Meat Trust remains at the end of the war a bigger problem for the world to face than it was before the ; war."
