RED CROSS WORK IN ITALY.
MR A. E. MOORE'S SPLENDID RECORD. (special to "the press.") K AUCKLAND, April 24. Voluntary' service as a Rod Cross worker in Italy was performed by Mr A. E. Moore, manager of the Ghristcliurch Branch of the Yorkshire Insurance Company, who arrived by the j lonic to-day. Mr MoOre was rejected | in New Zeauind lor war sorvice, and he | went to England to offer his' services | to the. authorities thero, but with no better result. He then volunteered for work with the British Red Crose, and ho was selected for special service in Italy. For over two years he was engaged with tlio Motor Ambulance Division in evacuating the wounded on tho various fronts in the Trontino. The fighting was waged at a height of 4000 feet, and the dillicuity of manipulating; tho cars under such circumstances, and particularly in view of tho fact that tho ico was feet thick, and chains and spikes had to bo attached to tho wheels was a very great one. Mr Monro was at Caporetto at the time of the d-baole in October, 1917. ITie British tinops saved tho situation. Their quick arrival, smartness, and brilliancy, put new heart into the Italian soldiers. Tho British division tho 23rd —which attacked on the Asiago front in March, 1918, was commanded by Major-General J. <M. Babtngton, a former Commandant of the Forces in New Zealand. . v Aftel- tho signing of the armistice, Mr Mooro went to Trieste, his business being to enquire into the condition of tho Italian prisoners of war. Tho lack of food in Austria was states Mr Moore. There were. 120,000 Italian refugees in Trieste starving, and in a pitiable state. Suits of clothes in Austria were costing £100 and more. , _ r For his cervices in Italy Mr Moore was awarded the Italian "War Cross.
