THE MAYORALTY.

MR HOLLAND XOT TO STAND. , The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) made tho following statement to a "Pross" reporter yesterday, with reference to tho Mayoralty:— "I feel that the time has now arrived when I should state mv intentions in regard to the forthcoming Mayoral election. Many of my t friends have urged me to seek re-election, and I greatly appreciate this further expression of confidence, and believe, with them, that I oould win the seat again if I consented to stand, but, after giving the matter full consideration, myj own feelings are that the time has arrived for me to retire. The main object for which I stood two years ago, has happily been accomplished, and the war is practically ended. This decision moans a very groat wrench to mo. _ I am connected with so many bodies, with whom it is a pleasuro to be associated, such as tho Domain Board, Fire Board, Riccarton Bush, McLean Institute, Otira Tunnel League, Progress Loaguo, and other smaller bodies. Those who have held the office of Mayor will understand what it means to cut off all tho.so at one stroke. The citizens have honoured me with their confidence for t-lio past 6 oven years, and I appreciate thi3 very greatly indeed, and I feel that I ran now retire, carrying with ino tlioir confidence and goodwill. As his Royal Highness tho Prince of Wales will probably be visiting tho Dominion during the next Mayoral term, I think that it is imperative that my 6Ucccssor should bo a man whose loyalty is abovo question, and who will upholtl tho dignity cf tho offico, and this must bo regarded oh a condition of my retirement."

Cr. A. S. Taylor has boon mentioned as a candidate for the Mayoralty, but ho informcu a "Press" representative yesterday that lie had decided to stand r.jithov tor the Mayoralty nor the City Council at the coming election. Ibe name of Dr. Thackor, M.P., is mentioned as a probable candidate for the Mayoralty.

An Auckland telegram states that Mr J. H. Gunson haa decided to stand for r.--election as Mayor of Auckland.
