THE SOLDIERS' APPEAL.
To-day wo publish the second list of subscribers, bringing the total to £2064 lis Gd. A perusal of the list should satisfy all soldiers that they have warm friends and sympathisers in every section of the community. They will be deeply grateful to the generous donors of tho large amounts given below; thoy are not less grateful for the humble half-sovereign, which is equally an expression of kindness and confidence. Thev earnestly want this club, not for the sake of "material pleasures it mav afford them, but because it will bo a home for their Association, and will keep them together, and unite them in doing the work that lies before them. Alreadv tho Returned Soldiers Association has done much to mould public opinion smcl secure support for their claims. So long as those claims aro just and reasonable they are confident thev will have thiit support. A strong proof of tho value of public opinion to the soldiers has been gj v en ° n jy this woek, in the prompt withdrawal by a Minister of his amazing refusal to allow a Soldiers' Fund to be collected in South Canterbury. . This present appeal received official sanction from tho Department of Internal Affairs many months ago; no Minister will dare to revoke tho permit. Soldiers aro arriving back almost every -week. If gifts are promptly made, it is hoped building operations mav be started within a few weeks.
