Sir James Allen loaves Dunedin for the North on Monday. Advice has been received that Captain Leslie B. Hutton, Main Body, N.Z.E.F., has been awarded the Military Cross," for gallantry on tho field of action.

Mrs H. Grahanie, of Timaru, has received word that her nephew, Lieutenant Rewai Mcintosh, youngest son of the late Mr. C. N. Mcintosh (a former Mavor of Tiinaru) is now in Edinburgh after having been a prisoner of war in Germany for the nast two years.' Lieutenant Mcintosh was in tho Air Service.

Mrs A. Russell, tho Terrace. Leith■field, has received word that her youngest son. Private Joseph Russell,' died from pneumonia on December 14th. at Torquay. Ho left with the Sfrd Reinforcements. Wellington Infantrv Regiment (Main Body). Ho was all through the Gallipoli campaign, and then went to France, remaining on active service until August, when he was gassed and invalided to Enpland. Ho was educated at tho Leithfield School.

Captain J. Marsdon Caughey, who has occupied tho honorary dual positions of railway transport officer and military landing officer for tho Auckland district for over two years, has resigned. The Defence authorities in Wellington recently decided to make the dual appointments mentioned a salaried position in each of the four centres. In a letter covering his resignation, Captain Caughey stated that he did not wish to stand in the way of any returned officer securing a salaried appointment.

Mr Roy Cooper, of tho Auckland branch of the New Zealand Insurance Co., lins received advice from tho Minister of Defence that his brother, Sergeant George B. Coopor, has been awarded tho Military Medal for gallantry in the field of action. Sergeant Cooper left New ZoalaAß in April, 1916, with the 11th Reinforcements, and proceeded to Egypt, and then to France, ■ where he was attached to the Canter- ■ burv Infantry Battalion, being wound- . ed In the first Somme battle in Sen- j tember, 1916. On recovering from Ms | wounds he joined up with the 12th Nel-j' son Company in May, 1917, and harbeen continually on active service. Colonel A. S. Herbert, N.Z.M.C., who i has been Government balneologist Jit Rotorua for 1C years, has resigned. The resignation will take effect at tho end of the present season, when Dr. Herbert will leave for England. iDr. Her- | bert took up the position or Gbvern- ' ment balneologist at Rotorua in July, , 1902, his appointment having been one of the first steps taken by the Tourist j Department which was created the previous year. He was born in Hertford. England, in 1867, and was educated at the Hertford Grammar School. He studied medicine' at Guy's Hospital, in South-east London. He graduated MR.C.S. and L.R.C.P.. England in 1890, and M.D., B.S. (Honoure), London, in 1892. He was the Gurney. Hoaro prizeman in 1890. Dr. Herbert;.\V* was appointed house surgeon and resident obstetric physician of Guy's Hospital in 1891. In the following year he was appointed resident surgeon at thfe British Hospital, Port Said. He was resident medical officer at the Royal Mineral Water Hospital, at Bath, from 1893 to 1895, and he wa* in private practice at Bath from 1895 to 1902. ,H© ( is a fellow of tho Balneological • and Society, and a member of the British Orthoptedic Society. Dr. . Herbert held many appointments ' as : lecturer on surgery ana kindred ' jects.
