The Paris "Daily Mail" recalls, now that parachutes arc so greatly used, that the inventor was Jacques Garnerin, who conceived the idea while he was a prisoner in an Austrian dungeon during the Napoleonic wars. Garnerin put his invention to the te3t on October 22nd, 1797. In the following July a woman made a balloon ascent with him, and both came down with parachutes at Dugny, near Paris.
