NINE HOURS IN A VOLCANO.

The activity of Vesuvius intensibcd 011 August 24th, with explosive phenomena and inter-craterie streams of lava. The director of the observatory, Signor _ Maladra, and the well-known American volcanoist, Mr Frank A. Perletj on August 26th visited the bottom of the crater and observed that the main eruptive cone was emitting enormous masses of smoke of various colours, forming a great cloud. Another cone erupted with a loud explosion, sending up showers of sparks through three small incandescent openings. Soveral streams of lava were flowing from the base of the central cone. The temperature, as ascertained by an electric pyrometer, at certain points was 2012 degrees Fahrenheit. Among the smoke were observed pale yellow flames, which were probably caused by hydrogen tn combustion. The principal crater has risen 202 metres since July, 1913. fhe investigators remained nine hours in the crater without sustaining any personal injuries or damaging their instruments. They brought back j numerous volcanic specimens and photographs.
