6 NORTH CANTERBURY BRANCH. A largely-attended meeting of tho North Canterbury branch of tho N.Z.E.I, was held on Saturday, tho president (Mr C. T. Aschman) presiding. The necessity for an increased vote for education was fully discussed, and the following resolutions tvoro passed unanimously : — (1) That an incroased vote for education is absolutely necessary ior tho efficient working of the education system. (2) That this mooting of North Canterbury branch of the N.Z.E.I, enthusiastically supports tho resolution of tlio "Wellington branch, asking tho Minister of Education to instruct his Department to draft, as a matter of national urgency, a. new salary scheme, whereby it will be secured that the minimum salary of a toaclier shall be £150 per annum and that all salaries not affected by this minimum bo raisod approximately by 2o per cent, on existing rates. The meeting furthor asks that any increase of salaries should be allotted' on somo more equitable basis than that adopted in the distribution of the war bonus. (3) That a Dominion scalo of sick pay, not loss favourable* than that in force in other branches of the public service, lie established for teachers. (i) That tho executive of tho N.Z.E.I. be asked to bring tho second motion -without delay before the Minister of Education and the Cabinet, and that the same resolution by brought forward when tho Cabinet receives the deputation from all parts of the Dominion. WOMEN TEACHERS' RESOLUTION. At a meeting of the Canterbury Women Teachers* Association on Friday the pressing need of reforms .was discussed, and the following resolution was carried unanimously: "That this meeting of the Canterbury "Women Teachers' Association urges upon the Government tho need of a largely increased education vote to provide better accommodation for the efficient training of the young, adequate staffing for schools, remuneration for teachers moro in keeping with tho high standard of ability that is essential for thoso who shall fitly carry on the work of education. This meeting also desires' to draw the attention of the Government to the low status accorded to women teachers in the primary 6chools of New Zealand, and claims a juster recognition of the valuo of women's work in schools.*'
