SPORTING.

RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Br "Lookeb-On.") The work was not ©£ a very interesting" nature yesterday morning, although some horses were sprinted, the caretaker having opened tho No. 6 grass gallop for those trainers that wanted to extend their charges over a few furlongs. The varioDs candidates for tho big handicaps were all out, and with the exception of Dusky Eve, who went short when trotted on the tan, they all did satisfactory work. Mason sont Afterglow along over threo furlongs 39 2-sth sec, and tho filly did it in easv fashion, and then Gloaming romped over half a inilo in slsee without an effort, Mascot and Menelaus following over tho samo course in 50 3-3 th eec both being on the bit. Sir Fanciful and Long Range wore not asked to do their utmost whilo galloping a mile, the last seven furlongs of which took lmin 34 4-sth sec. Client, by himself, galloped nine furlongs comfortably in 2min 0 3-sth sec, the last eeTea taking lmin 32 2-sth eec, and Snub wan given a working gallop over si, distance, and pulled up well Acre ran tho last five furlongs of a gallop m lmin 4 4-oth see, and appeared to be going ecratchily, but I was informed ho always gallops that way. Hymeetra and Nanna, both with fair weights up, did a fino gallop over seven fnrlongß, running tho last six in lmin 1G 3-6 th sec without ever being off their bits. Moutoa, Ivanova, and Oratress were companions over six furlongs in lmin 17 l-sth sec, and finished together, both full of running. Mustard Pot sprinted throe furlongs in 37 3-sth sec, and tv«s followed by Sasanof, who got to tho end of half a mile in 49scc, doing his best. Volo pulled up as if tho gallop would do him good, after covering a circuit at nearly three-quarter and a second at almost racing pace. It 'was a very nice piece of work. A number of two-year-olds were allowed to daah over the last two furlongs of tho circuit without being pressed. Tho outside of tho oouree proper will bo open for fast work this morning. Visitors to Riccarton on Monday will find tho enclosures looking at their best. Among th© improvements will b$ seen a drinking fountain close to tho number board, erected to tho memory of the late. Mr Patrick Campbell, who for nearly half a century was a staunch supporter of tho club, and who during that tim<> was always only too pleased to occupy any useful position among the club's officials requested of him. Tho fountain, which was designed and built by MiRobert Tait, of Christchurcb, is an obelisk of about seven feet high, built of unpolished Coromandei granite, and looks solid enough to stand for all time. It bears tho following inscription:—"Givo liie a blessing . . . . give mo also springs of wator. In memory of Patrick Campbell, of th© family of Kinlock, Perthshire, late of Ilam, Riccart-on. Born 184-1. Died 1917. For fifty years a member of tho C.J.C.. Erected by his wifo and children. A.D, 3918." Tho accoptanccs for tho first day of the Spring Meeting are large. Nineteen horses h»T 0 been paid up for in tho New Zealand Cup, and 21 in the Stewards' Handicap, whilo 22 two-year-oids of very even clasa havo been paid up for in the Welcome Stakes, and sis in tho Derby, Gloaming's presenc© having evidently frightened out a number of entrants. The fields for tho minor races during the day are. well filled, while, the Now Zealand daks, wliioh will ba run next Wednesday, has ten very smart fillies engaged. At present it looks as if all tho acceptors for th" Cup and Stewards races will go to tho post 03 all aro doin? well, but it is possible that KilJard may not bo a runner in the New Zealand Cup, as the Kilbroncy gelding s owner, Mr J. 13. Reid, has announced that his horse may not start, presumably because ha ts not ready for a Bevero raco over two miles. Yesterday's ferry steamer brougnt the following horses, who nv© engaged for tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting next Damien, Belle Noir, Matatuo, Bithoha, Demo*, Vacuum, Mill o' Gowrie, Glorify, Revocation, Trickery, Tressida, Devotion, Active, Bo Peep, Bonny Maid, Battle bong, Risingham, and Bonvillo. Tho C.J.C. has passed the Kaikoura Jockey Club's programme for the Meeting to be held at Kaikoura on Boxing Day.

(Bt "Seauchlight."} The track at Addington was not at its best yesterday, owing to the rain on Wednesday leaving the surface somewhat hard. As it was an off day, very little fast work wa3 done, but to-day the track should bo much improved, and some interesting v work witnessed. Norval King, in harness, trotted two miles. Towards tho finish he was stopping a good deal. Trix Pointer fF. Holmes) an<l Sungocl (F. Holmes, j'un.) gavo a pleasing display of pacing, getting to the end of a mile and a half in 3min 26aec. Schnapps, with the gear on, covered several circuits in a pleasing manner, indulging in fast sprints at intervals. H. Gaskill was a visitor to Addington yesterday with Mako Mako and Aumcroms. Both wero given half to three-quarter pace, Mako Mako showing to tho best advantage. \. Cox drove Reta i'etcr a mile and a half. The Petcreta filly did her work well, and it ifl doubtful if she liaa previous y been as forward as she ia at tho pzesont tmeRed Heather, also in Cos'e stable, trotted a useful mile. , . , . Paul Huon hit out freely whilo being driven a mile and a half by C-. Jamee. Electrocute got to tho end of two miles without a mistake, moving well. Capriccio covered a mile m saddle, whilo Cora Dillon paced an . d _ a jlfltJd thToe-quarter pace. During he. enforced spdTlhe Harold Dillon mare has put on C °The' l Ashburlon trainer, R.
