Marshall, ±Joyd, and Renner, was j up to revise the wharf tariff. _ f The Marino Department advised that an ( officer would visit Kaikoura to report on the application for a slip for fishermen's launches. .. Coole. represent- . ing the Patriotic Executive, waited on. fche , Council, and requested assistance for the returned Goldiers, and "Our Day" l'unds. , The Council voted £1000. j 1 PAPARUA. - i At the last meeting of the Paparua County < Council Mr James Leslie presided over a full ; attendance^ The Christchurch Tramway Board wrote . 1 with reference to the Hornby motor bus, ( etating that the finances of the bue were not at all satisfactory. The Board drew attention to the large deputation from H6rnby and Islington,, including the county chairman, which waited on the Board to request tho inauguration of the bus service. It was decided to reply that the chairman waa, as ho had stated, a deputationist in his private capacity as a resident of Islington. The Hornby and Islington could only, state their own desires and opinions without in any way binding the County Council. The | ; Council had to protect the interests of the : whole of the ratepayers of the ridings affected, while the Board was dealing with only that portion interested in the .bus centre. A member complained that the bus drivers did not conform with the ordinary rules of the . road. I The Post and. Telegraph Department wrote j asking for permission to erect a slot tele- ' phone at Scwkburn on a 6itc suggested near ' the railway. The necessary permission was granted. A deputation from the Canterbury Progress League, consisting of' Messrs Holland and Climie, waited on the Council with reepeot to the League's aimß and objects. The matter of subscribing the annual _ levy—£4o —was held over till the next meeting of the Council. It 'was decided to discontinue purchasing small birds' heads on the 20th inst. I The clerk's report stated that the crusher . had started work at Hornby during the, month and had worked nine days, crushing • 425 cubic yards of" metal, the greater part of which had been' put on to the Main South road. This road was being rolled at the time of meeting. An option had been obtained over the quarry site at Halswell, and the Council decided to purohase the two acres at the price asked, subject to tho acquisition of a satisfactory right-of-way. The chairman reported that race cleaning had started on September 2nd, notice of which had been given in the daily papers. Land owners had been requested by advertisement to clean private races, and also to grub gorse and' broom growing alongside the races on their properties. [ WAIMAIRI.The monthly meeting of the "Waimairi County Council was held last night, Mr W. P. Spencer presiding. It was decided to defer consideration of | the contract for extension of the electrio • lighting system, recently authorised by poll, j to a. special meeting. { Some discussion ensued with regard to complaints against the way the poundkeeper carried out his duties. It was decided to give him another chance. Mr H. J. Otley and Mr W. Nicholla, for the Hospital Board and City Council respectively, waited on the Council and asked it to reconsider its decision not to contribute towards the cost of putting the road, in front of the Hospital in order. The deputation thought that £50 would be a fair contribution towards, the cost of the work, in which the City Council and Hospital Board would share. It'was decided—jifter the withdrawal of the deputation—to'' arrange for a conference with tho Paparua County Council and the Riccarton Borough Council, to obtain an equitable j distribution of the cost. i Mr C. I In response to a request by the Burwood I School Committee, it was decided to attend ■ to the footpath near the school, but the • Council could" not see its way to widen the bridge. | Mr C. W. Hervey .resigned his seat on tho Board of the Technical College, and Mr ; TJren was elected in his place. j i It wae decided to write to the Tramway Board pointing out the danger of leaving j tiams and trailers at night on the line at i j Papanui at the junction of the Harewood ■ road. It was also decided to ask for a. shelter for passengers at Church Corner, and opposite the church at Burwood. HEATH COTE. A meeting of the Heathcote County Council was held last night. Present—Messrs C. Flavell (chairman), W. TV. Scarff, A. H. ' Adams. G. K. Burton, and E. E. Patten. The County Clerk reported that three building permits had been issued at paehmere, to ■ a total value of £1800, and one in the Valley of a value of £112 lis. The inspector reported that it would be advisable for the Council to put in a threephase motor in the top pumping station with so many big installations going ou. The Shirley Extension Syndicate wrote regarding tk© proposed bridge, asking if it was tho Council's deeiro to cancel the present agreement and enter into a fresh, one, with the objcct of postponing the work until after the war.—lt was decided to cancel all agreements with tlie syndicate. The Public Works Department wrote regarding tho exemption of part, of Smith street and Yogol street, Heathcote, eUtrng that enquiries were being made as to the ownership of the land fronting the portion of Smith street to be exempted, and if the consent of Mr Webb was in order an Order-in-Council would be prepared and cgazettal. The Department stated that, ae vogel street was to be exempted unconditionally, and the resolution passed by the Council was subject to the building line being set back to 33 feet from the centre of the street, it would be advisable for the Couiycil to pass a fresh resolution without conditions. A resolution was passed in accoraance with i the Department's request. , A letter was received from the AuditorGeneral regarding'loan interest, m which he maintained that the interest for the first year on the Avonside electric lighting loan could not be paid out of the loan unices stated.
