VIOLET DAY.

OVER £800 REALISED.

A morning of cloudless sunshine yesterday grpeted Violet Day, which this year was made an appeal on behalf of the Red Cross hostel for returned convalescent soldiers. And that a very successful appeal it was was proved by tho gratifying sum raised—£6ol, with a few small sums still to come in. ' Pro ™- early morning the stallholders wero busy at work arranging their pretty stalls, and all day long tho llower sellers vended, thoir fragrant vvares. There were bunches of violets of all sizes, and to suit all purses, and it was the exception to see anyone who did not have a violet posy. Masses of other spring flowers, golden wattle and daffodils, yellow primroses and cowslips, fragrant daphnoand Japonica made the flower stalls veritable places of beauty before which cno lingered, enchanted by the colour and tho gerfume. Two % violet stalls were conducted by Mrs Tobin and Mrs E. Hill, and by Mrs Cordy and Mrs Lawrie respectively; Mrs Marmaduke Bethell and Mrs Algar Williams sold flowers from a stall near the Cathedral, while at the patriotic bazaar now er stall were Sister McMurtne and Miss Hoidsworth. Mrs F C Raphael was in chargo of the "art needlowork, and Mrs Bristed and Mrs Vernon ran a very successful book stall. In charge of the cake stall was Mrs Richard Anderson, Mrs Donaldson, and Mrs Sleigh, while eggs were sold bv Mrs Jack Vernon. There wero various other means by which money was raised.

As on former occasions, th© violet competition wac very successful. The Thinners this year wore as follows: Best six violets: Mrs J. Middleton and Miss D. Brown (equal); bouquet, Mrs Harry Reynolds 1, Miss E. T. Simpson 2.
