EDUCATION BOARD.

I • . i SPECIAL MEETING. j A special meeting of the Canterbury Education Board was held yesterday far tho purpose of electing standing committees. • There were present: Messrs C. H. Opie (chairman), C. S. Howard, E. H Andrews, H. J. Bignell, i J. Maze, G. W. Armitage, J* J 1 son, A. Peverill. T. Hughes, W. A. Banks, W. Pi Spencer, and the Hon. J. Grimmond, M.L.C. j A welcome was extended to Mr 1. ; Hughes, the new representative on tho - Board of the Southern ward. j Mr Opie, in retiring from the position of chairman of the Board, expressed in feeling terms liis appreciation of the manner in which members had always assisted him, also the staff, to wiiom lie proposed a rote of thanks and confidence. . Tho motion -was seconded by Mr Jamieson and carried. Mr Opie then vacated the chair, which was temporarily taken by the secretary, Mr H. B. Lane. Mr Jamieson nominated Mr Bignell as the new chairman, but Mr Bignell, who comes from the West Coast, declined, expressing the opinion that ih-.c chairman should reside nearer Christchurch. JMr Jamieson thereupon proposed Mr Banks, who was elected to the position. In returning thanks, Mr Banks referred to the very great value of an educated democracy, and said that the poor man's son should have iw equal chance with anybody else. That could only be brought about by education. Incidentally, he expressed the opinion that were the education of the masses a world-wide fact, there would be iio such terrible conditions as those now obtaining in Russia. On the motion of "Mr Armitage, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to • Mr Opie for his past services as chair- • j man. -' Standing committees were elected as follows, the chairman of the Board | being ex officio a member of each: Buildings Committee: Messrs Armitage, Spencer, Grimmond, Jamieson, . Jamieson, and Peverill. Agricultural Committee: Messrs - J Spencer, Opie, Bignell. Grimmond, : | Hughes, Howard, and Maze. M formal School Committee: Messrs I Opie, Andrews, Hughes, Jamieson, . Peverill. and Howard. The election of the respective chairmen was left to the various committees.
