ASHBURTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council waa he.d laat night, the Mayor vMr R. Ualbiaith) presiding. It wa.j reported that the total oveidraft now stood at £10,10!) 18s Bd. A letter was read from Dr. Chesson, .District Health Officer, calling attention to the fact that there were a number of septic tanks within the borough, the _ effluent iroiu which was being discharged the side channels. This was a danger to publio health, and he recommended the Council to serve notice on the owners to _ the effect that the practice must bt discontinued. Received. It was decided to vote £10 10s to the funds of the Canterbury Progress League. The tender of G. T. Russell and Co., at £273 3s 3d, for reticulating the Netherby district ■ was accepted. On the motion o! Cr. Ferriman, the Reserves Committee was requested to report on the. question of reserving a nifmber of borough sections now unoccupied as building ' sites for returned soldiers. The Works Committee reported that 500 chains of asphalt footpaths in the borough were in a bad stato of repair. The estimated cost of putting them in order was £1250. . , It was decided to discontinue the tarring and Banding of paths, all new work and renovations to be carried out with properly prepared asphalt. Mr Ira Lawry offered to give a certain sum for the cleaning of the South Brighton Reserve. . Referred to Reserves Committee. Correspondence from - the City Electrical Engineer, in connexion with the establishment of a aub-station, waa received. . The manager'of the tramways stated that a piece of land had been purchased at the corner of Bowhill road and Osborne _ terrace, for road widening purposes, and asked the Council to arrange for tho formation and metalling of the land which had been .jestedin the Borough' CounciL Referred to Works Committee with power to act. On tho motion of Cr. Browning the resolution passed at the last meeting of the Council, censuring the Government for its apparent apathy in connexion with the establishment of a Solar Salt Works at South. Brighton was rescinded. The treasurer reported as follows:—Receipts £300 Is 10d. expenditure £144 4s 9d, bala-noo General Account cr. £31 17s 9d, South Loan Account or. £534 8s 2d. Twentyfour building permits had been issued to date, having the aggregate value of £4040. On the' motion of Cr. Israelson, it was resolved that 4 acres in reserve 1579, midway between Beatty and Jellicoe streets, be offered to tho Canterbury Education Board A3 a site for a school for South Brighton. The Works Committee recomtaended that Messrs Mclntyre and Lewis bo _ asked to prepare plans and specifications in connexion with a' proposed road through reserve 1579; that the depressions in footpaths caused by the removal of lamp-posts be filled . up; that openings in. footpaths at Herring Bay bo filled in; that sand be placed on the new footpaths in Richmond terrace; that marram and grass seed be planted at once; that owners be' requested to fill up sections in which pools of water are lying.
