THE CARNATION CUP.

To TBK HWrOK Of "THE PRESS '* Sir,—Permit mo to make a few remarks in reply to Mr A. E. Lowe's letter in your issuo of to-day. As both the competitors were aware of the conditions applying to the above the question of anv ambiguity in tljfe wording of the schedule was immaterial. In fact, Mr Lnnderv's exhibit was in order, and Mr Hoggan's would have been also, had he shown a "bizarre" as he stated he purposed doing, but for some reason, probably that he had not one in flower on the day of the show, failed to do 60. It was simply "Hoggan" v. "Landery"—"ambieuity" was not in the case, both exhibitors admitting the requirements t,f the class. Had it not been that Mr Hoggan knew, and had so frequently stated, that the "bizarre" was a necessary adjunct to the exhibit, Mr Bailey's decision would have been peceived witnout a murmur: but for a man to claim the cup when he admits his exhibit aoperfcaining thereto is not in order. Is nothing short of a gross irregularity, and deserving of the strongest censure. Mr Lowe's remarks anent this are much too mild. As there aro many varieties of carnations, and as onlv four were naired in the schedule, how can it be held that those four were notional? The inclusion of any of the other varieties wH"h were not. named, for instance, "Fhke's," ''Marguerites." "Mflmaison," mostcerta'Dly were optional, but the four named were a.»snlntelv ncessary. otherwise why were tbev nnrnrd toother with the ' word "included"? This should he clear to nnv unprejudiced mind. Mr Lowo's discovery tnat thp words "three blooms in evh rase." would admit of 36 varieties being shown is aorarent to anyone. f>T>d it is equally apparent also • that this is qm'te foreign to the at issue. Mr Lowe is nafuralfv rery ™uob interested in horticultural po-m-v. ties. Most of us are! we would, if r>«s=ih]e, hare the srhednles fio (v. plici+lv complete that no exh : Wtor would be able to take an unique advantage of a possible Inon-hole to claim a cup he is not. entitW tr>.—Yours, etc..
