RACING AND TROTTING NOTES.

(Br "Looker-On. w ) Thero is only a small chance of strong work being done at Riccarton before Saturday. Gazique, Gold Soult, and Whit© Blaze wero scratched for the Winter Cup at 11 a.m. yesterday. North Island exchanges state that Bon Revo was not withdrawn from tho Grand National Steepleciiaso because or unsoundness, but simply because his owner considered the horse had dono onough racing for the season. Some Riccarton trainers aro endeavouring to give their charges a little road exorcise, but most have not taken their horses out of their boxes since Saturday. Timaru has been moro fortunate than Christchurch in tho matter of weather, tho snowfall on Monday being hgnt, with bright sunshine yesterday. Tho racecourse was rrot affocted in any way by tho storm, and the going for tho South Canterbury Hunt Club's Steeplechase Meeting to-morrow promises to be perfect. Tho annual general meeting of members of 1 lie North Canterbury and Oxford Jockev Club will bo held on Friday, at 7.30 p.m. sharp, in v the Northern A. and P. Association's rooms, Raagiora.

(By "Searchlight.")

Tho Wasbdyke Handicap, at tho South Canterbury Hunt Club's Steeplechase Meeting to-morrow, will bring the light harness season of 1917- ' 18 to a close. The Auckland trainer, IV. Orange, is expected to arrivo shortly from the north with tho trotting mare Syrie, to compete at tho forthcoming Metropolitan August Meeting. Matchlight, who recently _ entered Oakhainpton Lodgo, will race in tho interest of Cross Bros, and J. Brycc, at the Metropolitan August Meeting, a partnership having lately been registered betweon the parties. El Carbine, Silver Shoe, and Dot Robbins. who claim engagements at Addington next month, are reported to be doing satisfactory work in tho south. | Record breaking lias evidently taken on in Australia, as two well-known trotting owners are likely to send tlicir horses against time at tho next meeting of the New South Wales Trotting Club. The horses are Globe Derby and Maori Land. The former will be handled by C. Corby, and the latter by P. Riddle. Globe Derby has a record of 2min 28sec for nine furlongs, equal to 2min to the milo, whilo Maori Land is credited with doing better than 2min 13soc.

A whale recently washed ashore at Bawdsey, Suffolk, was turned into glycerine to make shells for British guns. The whale weighed about 14 tons. Immediately on its appearance it was claimed by tho National Salvage Council, and a fatigue party at once attacked it with knives and hatchets, and tho oil was extracted in a "digester." The-glyi-erine should provide propellant for T. 30 IS-pounder snells. Tho bones will increase the supply of phosphatic manures urgently needed on the land.
