THE CARNATION CUP.

TO THE EDITOB OF "xHE VRE3S." Sir, —Mr Jlodgers, in your issuo today, points out a very considerable discrepancy between Mr Clark's rendering of tho class for the. Carnation Cup and the way it is printed in the schedule. Mr Clark contends that "12 varieties throe i>f each is asked for," but the schedule does not soy so. Tho schedule requirements are, "Twelve vases of carnations, distinct varieties . . . three blooms in each vase." Tho exhibitor would bo quite in ordor if he showed 36 varieties, and staged thexn three each in 12 vases; in fact, he would be far more in accord with the schedule than tho exhibitor who showed twelve varieties three of each, as all his blooms would bo "distinct varieties," and yet Mr Clark can see no ambiguity. Why the whole class is the apotheoais of ambiguity. If tho class, had been worded "twelve carnatiops, distinct varieties, three of each in separate vases," an exhibitor -would know at once what was required, and if two small words, "to be/' had preceded "included," the class would have been beyond question as to conditions. 1 am not concerned about !Mr Hoggan and tho cup, as he knew what was wanted, and should have either complied or have stood out, but I am very much interested in horticul- | tural societies, and if this case will cause committees to take more pains to make tho conditions plain in their schedules, it will have achieved a good purpose.—Yours, etc., A. E. LOWE. Tai Tapu,* July 19th.
