A pleasant finale to the conference of the secondary school teachers, which has been taking place in Chnstchurcn during tho past icw days, was the invitation issued to members by Mr and Mrs C. IS. Bevan-Brown to have afternoon tea at their residcnco on tho Cashmere Hills yesterday afternoon. About twenty members of the conference availed'themselves of the invita-' tion, those who did not do so having plready left for their homes in different parts of the Dominion. Prior to proceeding to tho residence of Mr and Mrs Bevan-Brown, where tea awaited them, the visitors were shown over the lovely garden of Professor J. Mac-1 milla'n Brown. Afternoon tea was an enioyablo featuro of the outing, the aftrtrnooai being a damp and chilly one After tea Mr W. J. Morrell played and Mr Stuart contributed nn enjoyable song. At the fortnightly meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Mrs T. E. Taylor presided. HINEMOA LADIES' SHIMMING CLUB.

The Hinsmoa Ladies' Amateur Club held their annual social and dance and presentation of prizes at Ridgley Half on Thursday.. There were between 80 and 90 members and their friends present. A most enjoyable concert formed the first part of the programme, items being given by tne following. Mr and Mrs llobson (violin solo), Mrs Wood (song), Miss Jessie Chapel (recitation), Mr C. Atkinson (monologue), while Miss G. Patrick gave a very hne exhibition of fancy dancing. In the absence of Lady Clifford, the president of the club. Mrs H. S. Batcliclor presented the prizes. Esther Batchclor again holds the Champion Challenge Cup, she having won it two years in succession. The following members won prizes, medals, and bars: Misses Esther Bhtchelor, Kathleen Bristed, Ellie Hannan, Kathleen Hannan, Maisie James, Lillie Orr, Jessie Dunbier, Mabel Bilson, Rene Greig, Madge Cox', Agnes Black, Patrick, and Mesdames Wood, Dunbier, Atkinson, and Empson. On behalf of the secretary, Mr Atkinson read a brief report of the club's progress. The success of the club is due to a large extent to Mrs Batchelor, who has been untiring in her effort to further the club's progress. The evening concluded with a dance. Mrs Peraru and Mrs and Mr I Robson provided the music.

TO-DAY'S RECIPE. Game Puree.—Remove the bones and simmer them in a little water for at least an hour, when gravy is not at hand.
