The now Governor of New South Wales (Sir Walter Davidson), speaking at the annual carnival of the Sydney police and firemen a few days ago, said:—"Australia is a land of fine men and beautiful women. I have come from a land in which I have shaken my fist at anybody in the regiment as tall as I was, but I have to look up to those here. I wish prosperity to the police and firemen. 1 have been in both trades —a superintendent of police and in charge of a fire brigade in a large city—but I feel sure that I will learn a lot here."
