Sir Robert Anderson and Mr Charles Rhodes, members of the Defence Expenditure Commission, arrived from Dunedin last evening. The Hon. G. W. Russell ♦ visited Whansarei vesterday, and was welcomed to the district by members of the local bodies. He left ior Helensville in the evening. Captain R. C. Tilley, Mr C. J. Ward, ]>r Clicsson, Mr H. J. ISeswick, Majoi Gabites, and Captain Grey, were passengers from Wellington by yesterday s ferry steamer. Mr J. Sead-Gowing, of Christchurch. has been advised from London that his brother, Mr J. Gowin"-. has been awarded the Oulor of the 'British Empire, in recognition of his services in connexion with tne London Munitions Tribunal. Word was received yesterday by -> lr E Denham. of Sumner, that his. son, C I. Denham, had been appointed lieutenant in the Motor-boat Patrol Service. Lieut. Denham is well Known in Sumner, having taken a vcr J!.. a , 1T ? interest in life-saving and lifeboat matters. Mr Bovd Cable, the well-known author, in a letter to the editor of "The Press,"' expressing his thanks for the review of his lust work, "Grapes of Wrath," adds:—"l think that possiblv, since I have, as you probably know, a good many friends 111 Christchurch, it may interest your readers to hoar that I am at present attached to the Roval Firing Corns, and am taking the opportunity of making known some of the very fine work done by the air service." The Auckland Presbytery, on Tuesday ovening, received formally tho resignation of the Rev. G. B. Monro, who for forty years and eight months has boon minister of St. Luke's Church, Remuora. Members of the Presbytery spoke eloquently of tho " Rev. Monro's zeal and ability, and of I his excellent work for the church and for the community at largo. The Presbytery accepted tho resignation as from March 31st, with sincere regret. Tho Presbytery hoartily and strongly 1 recommended to the assembly that the 1 llev. G. B. Monro be given a position j of minister emeritus, with a seat in the s church court. Mr Monro is at pro- . sent in Timaru., where ho intends stay--3 ing for tho winter. Our London cocrresnondent writes l that on the occasion of his retirement - from the chairmanship of the Executive of the New Zoalnnd War Contingent Association, Lord Plunket was presented by the members of the executive with a paper-weight in tho form of a silver kiwi, standing on a silver pedestal. In acknowledging tho gift, Lord Plunket referred to tho many difficulties that had arisen <find been overcome, to the steady progress made by tho Association, and to the friendship and consideration shown to him. He would always continue to take an interest in the work which was being so energetically carried on by - the new chairman, Mr I. W. Raymond.
