A. AND P. SHOW.

ASHBURTON. Official? —President. Mr F. Fra.mptoc: ticpreiident, Mr J. Cow: treasurer. Mr J. Tucker: secretary, Mr J. B. Christian. Glorious weather favoured the Ashburton A. and P. Association for the-Forty-first Annual Show yesterday (this year it oiie-dny event), and the display was. tnking it ail through, a highly MicccrvVful one- well managed, .ind attended hy a very Inrgc gathering of the public, including tho Hon. \V. D. S. .Mac Donald, Minister of Agriculture. The entries were appreciably better than lor the na.-t two exhibition?. the main increases being in the cattle classes and in the produce section. The aggregate of entries was 17ii0 ; being an increase of 197 over last year., and IGJ above the total for 19115. 1 lie following is a tnble showing a comparison ol en trie.- for the past three years-: — lniij. 1917. 1918. Sheep 334 C'att.e ... o- o7 lUt Horses ... -'32 270 I'ig, ... lti 19 :HS C\!gs ... 17 12 21 i'rodtice, etc. '-'-i Wj 1010 Totals IGIB 1083 1780 There was a very worthy display of sheep penned. lne condition of the major proportion of tho exhibits calls tor 110 criticism, though as is-usually the case then? wu*> an odd one or two that hardly came up to the recognised show standard. A lew merinoo kept up the prestige of the old foundation breed, iVicsM'i li. tl. li. l/ill and Lt. U. Wrigttt being the only exnibitors. Ilie championship ior rams was won by Mr hill, Mr bright annexing that lor ewes. Duly one Lincoln wai slionn, a rani, Mr *D. G. Wright being tho exhibitor, and gaming a red card. The Knglish J<eicc*>ters were not very numerous, but they were a decidedly nice lot, and here 'Mr 1. Andrew, ot Kllesmcre, and the Canterbury Agricultural :College practically liad "'lie field to 'themselves. Mr Andrew was remarkably successful, winning the Lauristou Cup, both championships, the owe reserve, and every hrst prize ticket. The College was awarded a reserve in ewes anil several blue cards. The EJlesnicre breeder was tho only exhibitor of Kyelands. and gained all the awards, 'lljc Jtorder Lcicestcrs, which vied with the Southdowns in being the best represented breed in the show, were an excellent all-round lot, nicely brought out and of fino quality. There was- voty fair competition, aud tho classes wore mostly large. The championship for ranis went to Mr J. Dowtnu aitc, who showed an imported shoop bred by Mr I>. I'. Klliott, of Nesbit Hill, Scotland. The same exhibitor was awarded the reserve in rams, and the championship for e*ves, with another very nicc imported animal. The College gained the owe reserve with a sheep bred by the exhibitors. Mr Dowthwaite was awarded red

' cards in the clafses for two-shear rains, and one-shear ewes, and Mr AV. Anderson gained a similar award for ram lambs, pon of flock and ewe lambs. The College secured first prizes for one-shear rams, one and two-shear ewes, against veo' strong competition. There was a better entry in the Southdown classes than in any other at the show, no fewer than six breeders vieing with each other. Mr H. J. Andrew gained the ram championship, but the College did remarkably well in the ram classes, gaining the reserve, first prizes in four clas&cs, and lastly the ewe reserve. The ewe championship was won by Mr J. Andrew with a ewe of his own breeding, and another exhibitor who was more or less successful in gaining prizes was Mr John Grigg, who scored first and second for a pen of shearling flock ranis. Though fewer in numbers, the Shropshires were a nice quality lot. The ram championship was won by the College, and the ewe blue ribbon by Mr I. Andrew. Both these exhibitors were very successful, but Messrs T?. Oakley and J. Grigg aho scorcd in several classes. Four breeders camc together in the Ronmey classes, and the College was successful in annexing both the championships and the reserve for ewes, the ram reservo going to Mr J. Grigg, who had a good deal of success in"other classes a|?o. The Corriedales made a good showing, and here the ram championship went to Mr C. H. Eneor, a nd the reserve to Mr T!. AY. Anderson. In the other classes much success 'came the w:ty of Mr J. .Stringfellow, who won the ewe championship and reserve. The fat sheep and lambs were a little disappointing as regards numbers, for u district like Ashburton could have done"better, but the quality was right, nnd some well finished sheep ajid lambs were in the pens, the prizes bemg well divided amongst local graziers. The cattle section was the one m which the greatest improvement was shown and vcrv considerable displays of Shorthorns. Jerseys, and Holstems were' in the pens. The bull classss in the Shorthorns were comparatively small, and the championship went to Mr D. G Wright's Charming Count Bth bred bv -Mr A. Chamberlain. Iho class for cow of any age and calf < r in milk was a good one, and the winner. a line cow Shown hv Mr J>. Fraivipton. Queen of Eosedale lIT., gained the red card, and the championship, Mr H. D. Butterick showin<T the second prize cow. Mr Frampton and Mr J. Grigg divided the rest of the premier awards. Oiilv three Ayrshircs were shown by Mr T. McDowell. Some good quality Jerseys were paraded, the bull championship going to Mr J. Moriaritv, and the championship to Mr M. "Walsh's Jersey Belle. . There "were some very iriiod classes in the Holsteins, cows and heifers in particular being prominent. The. blue ribbon for hulls went to a Lnngbeaeh bred animal. Longbeach General Botha, shown by Mr L. R. Stoddnrt. The same exhibitor —who took most of the principal prizes in •the breed—showed the cow champion.

Gtiinoaslea Dolly. an upstanding, roomy cow with an excellent milk vessel. The milch cows were a very useful and well-bred lot. and the tV.t stock were well up to the standard set in a good fattening district. The Ashburton Show can always be depended on for a good show of horses, both light and heavy, and the display yesterday was no exception to the rule. The draught horses were a very good lot, and though some, uncvenness was apparent the general effect was excellent. The champion entire was si fine upstanding three-year-old. Bold Record. bred and shown by Mr E. E. Jenkins, the same horse gaining the C lydesdale Society's medal. A fine ring of wet mares came before the judges, the placed animals .being good specimens. The red card was taken in this class by Mr D. G. "Wright's Proud Beauty, which was also the reserve champion, but a dry mare. Pfcgay Ronald, shown by Mr W. Do-ik. gamed the championship ribbon deservedly, having great size and substance and being a good mover. The same mare won the Clydesdale Societv's medal. The three and fillies made attractive classes, Mr "W. J. r ! aylor winning the first and Mr D. G. -Wright the last, against good competition. In spite of the great vogne of the car in the Ashburton district- a round dozen or so of enthusiasts still made a worthy showing *n the licrlit- hor.->c section, and some verv i we!!-nllod harness end hack classes were ringed. Prominent among the exhibitors of harness horses were Miss D. Keith. J. H. Stringer. D. W. Westenra, and R. Campbell, jun.. and red card-takers in the saddle and cob and pony classes wore Messrs Sowdcn and IJoag. Miss McCarthv, Mi« s 1' Peter and Miss A. G. Rich. Messrs J. and 1 . Donald, C. S. Osborne. J. Osborne. I«. Lochkead. and R. Keith. The pig section had risen nearly iOO jmsi* cent, tdncc lsist slioWj and a really

good lot wore shown. In the Berkshire classes there was fairly good competition, Mr .1- Hadley hcing_ th" mo>t successful exhibitor. In \ orkshiies Messrs A. Drummond and J. Hadley divided the premier honours, but the last-named exhibitor, who is an Ashburtoriite. swept the board in iarcre Blacks and m porkers and baconer?. A good, useful lot of sheep dogs were shown, the winners of the ird cards in the various classes being Messrs F. McDonald. W. A. T.ill, W. Drennar. Vf. G. Patterson, and P. B. Hampton, the last-named taking ;wo first prize?. There was very good competition ; n the homo produce section, and the quality of the exhibits was first-rat-" 1 . Particular commendation ronw be to the. exhibitors in the cookorv section, both adults and pupils from the techiiic.il classes. The exhibit.; of grain and seeds were very fair, as was t!u- display of garden produce, but the •fruit was only moderate. The juveniles made a remarkably good showing in the section tor the schools, the technical pupils in particular making ;; fine showing. PRIZE LIST.
