WILD RUMOURS IN BERLIN. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyrig-ht.) (Australian and X.Z. Cable Association.) AMSTERDAM, November 6. Wildest rumours of an earlv peace are circulating in Berlin. It is stated that Baron von Hertling's maiden speech as Imperial Chancellor in the Reichstag, to be delh'ercd on November 22nd, will contain a proposal for holding a preparatory peaco conforence at Berne, each belligerent sending two delegates.

The "Vossische Zeitung" states:— "Now is tho timo for Germany to offer an easy peaco to Russia and Italy. They must see thnt England is unable to help them. Only the Central Powers can solve their food difficulties."

GERMANY'S SERIOUS FOOD SHORTAGE.

Sir Arthur Yapp, tho newly-appointed Director of Food Economy, in a speech at London, said that, while our food position was serious, tho position of tho Central Powers was still more serious. Tho only commodity Germany had in any degree resombling us wag potatoes, of which the allowance was 71b per hoau weekly. There was no tea in Germany. The weekly ration in Germany ofbread or flour was Gib per person doing heavy work, and 4jlb for others; meat, 9oz; sugar, 6oz; and butter, 31oz. Twenty-six eggs are allowed each person yearly.

TREACHERY OF CONSTANTINE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) ATHENS, November 6-Ex-Queen Sophia's correspondence is incomplete, as tho wireless telegrams are missing. She described tho bloody events at Athens on December Ist, 191G (when Allied troops wero treacherously firod on, many being killed), as a splendid victory over the four Great Powers, and asked when tho German and Bulgar forces would bo sufficiently reinforced to take the offonsive against tho Entente. Tho Kaiser replied urging Constantino to attack General Sarrail.

The Entente's blockade followed, and the Quoen telegraphed the Kaiser, saylpg that thoro was no food or munitions to enable Constantino to attack General Sarrail, and again imploring him to hasten to tho Greeks' assistance. The Kaiser replied with a blank refusal.

Wheli the Crown Council met at Athens and was finally forced to accept the Entente's ultimatum, Sophia telegraphed to the Kaiser that the Allies were "infamous swine."

VON BERRER'S DEATH. ROME, November G. General von Borrer was shot while motoring at Udino by a carabineer. Ho was not killed at Riga, as the Germans claimed.
