TEACHERS AND THE WAR.
CALLING UP OF SECOND DIVISION* EDUCATION BOARD'S POLICY. The policy of the Canterbury Education Hoard in regard to teachers called up I'or activo service came under brief review yesterday morning, when a letter was received from the First Canterbury Military Service Board enquiring how the Education Board was situated with regard to teachers, and whether it could provide substitutes for all teachers i'or whom the Education Department did not appeal. In reply to the chairman (Mr C. H. Opie), the secretary (Mr H. C. Lane) stated that there were 97 teachers in the Board's employ who were in the Second Division, and of these 66 were under 40 > years of age. The Board had in its* service a number of good i'emalo teachers, and no doubt they could take over some of the work of the male teachers, that was, if the Board, after consulting tho inspectors, were given a free hand by the School Committees. Tho positions of these senior female teachers could be filled by other female teachers coining on. i The chairman said it was not necesj sary for the Board to apply for exempj tions nt the present time. I Mr E. H. Andrews saw with the calling up of the Second Division great difficulties in regard to the schools, and ho thought they might possibly have to review their policy shortly. Consequently he deprecated sending any I hasty reply to the Military Service I Board. | Mr T. W. Adams considered Mr Ani draws had hit tho nail on the head. He moved that the matter be referred to ; the Appointments Committee for con- ■ I sideration. j The motion was adopted. ;
