PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
ORDINARY MEETING
There was a fair attendanco at the !. ordinary meeting of tho Philosophical 1 Institute of Canterbury, which was held in tho biological laboratory at Canterbury College last evening. Mr Lawrence Birks, the president, presided, and announced that Dr. A. Foster had been elected a member ol' the Institute, It was proposed to pay a visit to Lincoln College on a Saturday towards tho end of the year; "With regard to the jubilee of tho Auckland Institute, it was ra»Sved to pass a vote of congratulation and admiration on tho wort the Institute had done during its 50 years of life. Mr L- P. Symes gave a brief address on records he, in conjunction with DrHilgendorf, had taken in the rise and fall of water in an artesian well at Papanui. The chief point of interest, was the fact that th 6 indicator placed at the "well showed distinctly tho _tr&- " mors caused by the earthquake at Masterton on August 6th. It was also peculiar to notico that tho passing of a tramcar or .water sprinkler on tho Pap-..iui line unmistakably, though momentarily, altered the levol of tho water in tho well. Mr F. R. Callaghan then read a paper on the course of land values in. Canterbury. The earliest sale recorded was that' by Major Komp in 1848, when an area of land was purchased from the Maoris for £5000, the value ot which was now somewhere in the region of £40,000,000. The speaker dealt with the fluctuations in the price of land in the province from the early days, and explained the economic significance or theso fluctuations.
