. A deputation, consisting of the President and members of tne master Painters' Association waited upon tne Soutn Australian Premier. (Mr A. M. Peake) last week, and urged that-- tho Health Act should be amended to make it compulsory for all old papers to bo stripped irom walls of houses and so on., Daiore they Mere repapered. It was pointed out that when wallpaper had become so dirty and filthy that it was necessary to renew it, manifestly it must be unhealthy to leave that papor on the wall and merely cover it over. The old paper frequently harboured vermin, and instances were quoted whore workmen had refused to handle old wallpaper because of its condition. They had known so many as 16 papers to be on one wall. The cost of stripping old paper was only slight—approximately 10s a room —but in many cases the owners of properties refused to allow it to be done on the score of expense. The deputationists said they had no axe to grind, but were 6imply pushing the matter from a health standpoint. It was pointed out that the Association had communicated with twenty-one muncinal bodies in connexion with the question, and seventeen favourable replies had been received. The Premier "said he was impressod by the case of the deputationists. He was satisfied that the covering over of old wallpapers was insanitary. He pointed out that, in response to a previous requeet, it had been decided to deal with the matter when an amendment of the Health Act was next before Parliament. He, however, promised them he would go further than that, and action would b« taken next year to deal with the question, whether or not any other amendment of the Health Act was placed beiore Parliament.
