CHRISTMAS AT THE FRONT.

GIFTS FOR CANTERBURY

SOLDIERS.

The ladies connected with tho Lady Liverpool Fund, who havo dono so much in tho past two years and moro to provide comforts for tho Canterbury men at tho front, havo issued an appeal for subscriptions to enable them to send parcels of Christmas gifts to onr soldiers. ' This year approximately 7000 men will have to bo provided for, and if tho fund is supported as well on this occasion as in previous years, it is intended to send every man from this province who is in Franco, Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, or any other war-front, a parcel containing such little comforts and luxuries as experience has shown are most appreciated, and a Christmas pudding. For the last two C'nristmases tho soldiers' puddings havo been ordered from Home, but this year, on account of the shortage of food, and especially of sugar, in England, it has been thought advisable to purchaso them here. Messrs Aulscbrook and Co. havo undertaken to make tho puddings, and the New Zealand Refrigerating Company will put them in the tins and paek them. The fact that tho puddings are of local production will no doubt add to tho pleasure of th© recipients.

The appeal for money for the parcels and puddings is made some six weeks earlier this year than last year, as in a cablo lately received by the Minister of Defence, Brigadier-General Richardson stated that parcels from New Zealand took about five months to reach the troops. The fund will, therefore, have to be closed before the end of August. Subscriptions should, for that reason, be sent in without delay. Any subscriber of 5s or upwards will have the privilege of having his or her name and address enclosed in one of tho gift parcels, with a request that the recipient shall write to the sender acknowledging receipt. Subscriptions will b° received at the office of "The Press," and will be acknowledged in our columns. "THE PRESS" LIST.
