SUMNER. The Sumner Borough Council mot Inst night. Present —The Mayor (Hon. J. Barr, iI.Xi.C.), Councillors .T. H. Gibbs, C. Benjamin, A. Senior, "W. J. Lawson, T. E. "VYkitfield, B. I'icrcy, H. C. Jamicson, and T. Dryburgh Tho Itady Liverpool Fund executive wrote asking for assistance in regard to Surprise Pac!:et Day.—lt was resolved to give £L worth oE tickets tor tho Hot Salt Water Baths. The Mt. Herbert County Council wrote regarding endorsing a resolution urging that power bo given to Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards to borrow money for capital expenditure.—lt was decided to 6upport tho resolution'. The Mayor was appointed the Council's representative on the Domain Board.
The Finance Committee recommended that Messrs H. "Winter and G. Orr bo appointed inspectors under tho electricity bylaw; that tho rent of the hall bo remitted in tw*} cases; that no rebate or refund of hall foeo be made ir> connexion with any danco social; that interest and sinking fund on the clectrio works and Town Hall loans bo paid out of general, account; that no money bo spent at Taylor's Mistake except that collected from th© owners of hute, and that no grant be made to the Summit Road Association.—Adopted. Tho "Works Qommittee recommends that the old engine shed be shifted, go that it may bo used for the road roller and Council carte; that tho work of "building a stone wall at tho Dcetrnctor site be put in hand in- accordance with the •estimates; that the road roller bo fitted for using a scarifier, at an estimated cost of £25; that G. Brooks be offered, without prejudioe, the mtm of i'l 4s, in fall satisfaction of any claim he may think ho has in regard to loss of pound fees; and that a hose winder be purchased for the Fire Brigade.—Adopted.The_ Superintendent of _ the Fire Brigade submitted a comprehensive report on the fire-fighting appliances in tho borough.—The matter was referred to tho "Works Committee. Mr J, Carter wag appointed Boat Harbour It.spec tor. and the question of clearing awnv the old fishermen's lockers was left in his hands. It was decided to leave the ladies' bathin.? shelter open during the winter months. The question .of drawing up rogulatiocs requiring carriers' vans to carry tail lights was referred to tho .By-laws Committee. RICCIRTON. A meeting of the Eiccarton Borough Council was held last night. Present—Crs. A. D. Ford (in the chair), A. Hampton, A. E. Steere, J. Munnings. W. Dalley, H. "W. "Wise, T. J. Stokes, and H. Gudseli. The chairman apologised for tho absence of the Mayor.
The Mount Herbert County Council -wrote asking- tho Council to endorse a motion appealing: to the Minister of Internal Affairs to briug forward legislation enabling Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards to borrow money for capital expenditure.—Agreed to. A report from Superintendent Warner, containing proposals for fire protection -was read, and referred to tho Fire Prevention Committee. The rates for the year were struck, aud a special ardor passed authorising the issue of debentures for £350 for the completion of tho electrical reticulation system. NEW BRIGHTON. TJio Isow Brighton Borough Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewiute), Cre. F. Christian, E. Browning, F. Sinocck, A. At. Ghivers, C. leraolson, J. Buxton, £3. A. leaver, A. W. Owics, and C. H. Winny. A resolution of sympathy was passed to tho relatives of tho late Privato X). Gillespie, killed in action. It was decided to accept the invitation of the Hospital Board to be present at the opening of the Chalmers Memorial Ward. 1 The Fire Brigado drew attention to the unsatisfactory means provided for giving alarms, and suggested that an dec trie alarm ( system bo provided.—Referred to the Firo Brigade Committee, a!co an application for the annual grant. Mr R. F; Martin's application for a special permit to erect a dwelling was referred to the By-laws Committee. The Christchurch City Council stated thai it was prepared to contribute a sum not exceeding £26 per annum towards the salary of a patrolman for tho beach. Mr Joshua Little wrote in reference to his scheme for dredging- the river Avon.—lt was rosolved that dredging the river judiciously and filling up low parts of the borough would be a benefit. The estimates for tho year were read and approved. Tho Finance and By-laws Committee reported that the receipts for the fortnight wore £11 OsSd, and the expenditure .£543 15-s Id. Two building permits had been granted, valued at £400. The Committee recommended that legal opinion be sought as to whether the Council could compel owners of nnfenoed sections to fences and that action be taken for tho recovery of rates.—Adopted. | Tho Fire Brigade Committee recommended j that certain equipment bo provided for the ! On Cr. Browning'© motion it was decided to request tho Fire Brigade to; submit their last audited balance-sheet to the Council.
A resolution was carried protesting against the us© of tho present out-of-dato and'noisy trailers on tho New Brighton tram line.
On Cr. Sinoock'e motion it was resolved that those who were responsible for the report and information given to the Minister of Internal Affairs regarding- affairs at Xev.Brighton be written to asking them where thev had got tho information from.
