RACING AND TROTTING
NOTES.
Glenthorpc ran a much better raco in tho Fairfield Hurdles, at Ihinodin, yesterday, than ho did on tho first day, but 3>ionysius must have beaten him only for somo interference early .'in- tho raco. Mt. Victoria got left fifty yards, and then finished fourth: jvith ordinary luck he must- havo troubled tho winner. United Service vas always on the scene, and if he gets aver his bleeding habit ho will win races before long. George did not leave the barrier, and his rider, J. Laggetfc, was brought before, tho Judicial Committee, who severely cautioned him, ' ! Malvolia was made a good favourite . for tho Silver stream Handicap, at Dunpdin, yesterday. She was well placed in tho early stages, but failed over tho last two furlongs, and is evidently much better under a light seal© of ■ weights. Minesweeper, who is by Canrobert from Mabella, is a raro good cut of a horse. Later, he ran a raco ■over a* mile, and ho looks like developing into a handicap horso next season. A chango of horsemen was tried on San Sebastian, but he ran. no better, and scorned in troublo all the way. Msrrsa mado a very poor showing at Dunedin yesterday; at no stage of the .Provincial Handicap did she ever _apijpear, and she was a soro disappointment to her multitude of backers. Sir 'Hamilton, who,won in his two previous .Harts, was quite outclassed. On previous form he was badly handicapped.
; Marc Anthony is not the horse he ~-Tas twelve months ago. Ho was always well placed, but was not good inough. - King Star gave a veiy poor showing all through tho Dunedin Meeting,. On Oamaru rurfning he should have raced well, /but ho ran a duffer. •: Tho Wingatui Steeplechase at Dunediu yesterday was a catastrophe. Edietone fell at the second fence, then Zarcoma, Oiatonu, and Golden Butter-fly-toppled over at the sod -wall. Four . furlongs from home Recharge and Garnmoro went out, and that left Kirkby, Silverspire and Kaupokonui ;in the lead. There is a diversity of .opinion as to what brought about tho at the last fence, but from observation and enquiry it seems that on approaching it Kaupokonui who was on, tno outside, had a slight lead, and •Milder pressure ho crossed in front of tho other two. Rising first at the fonco he struck it, and blundered on landing. Silverspire landed up against his quarters and knocked him down, falling himself, and in struggling to Eavc himself, fell in front of Kirkby and'brought him to grass. When tho ■ three fell The Brewer was a hundred yards away with Tommy another hundred yards back. Barring accidents it Would have been a great race home.
Mawson hit one of his stifles very \ Badly at Dunedin yesterday, and at the lame time cut a fish in the tendons of" jis off fore leg. He will not race again »r some time. Silverspire is a smaller edition of lis half -brother, Magdala. Ho «# a fine fencer, . and when v onditioned will bo a good 'chaser. At present he is not half, ready. Ho is tome trained, and is vety light. , Though Kilkee raced in Mr, J. B. neid's name at Dunedin yesterday, here is a possibility that ho has been Si'i as k® not carrying Mr Reid's - /ell-known colours.
, , Buller gave a lot of trouble at the wmer .in the -Wairongoa Handicap at 'Vfftgatm yesterday. Ho • eventually fftn second, and his rider was promptly Md up by the Judicial Committee. Tho committee accepted the explanation offered, but withhold their decision. ,?Wv people thought Mnltoo .ran tho Jauefield Handicap at /Uunedin yesterday, but tho judge did lot place him in tho first four. Tho public bad a- turn up when Jock • won tho lnvermay "Welter at Wingatui yesterday. Favoruites C ot a good beating all through tho meoting, but Jock, wild was tho popular fancy, won very comfortably. Jlajrofia got all tho best or the start, and turned into the straight with a good lead, but onco again she failed to run on, and though fafish socon< * was stopping badly at the .Harold Child must have been a rod «i pickle as tho son of Harold Dillon won the Second Amateur Handicap at Canterbury Park yesterday with ridicu- . ous cn ®®j from a field of thirty. By annexing the Progressive HandiPark yesterday, Viooacnud scored his second success at +!?° Ho did not begin any too wen but after going a mile and a. Half had the race in safe keeping, nappy Jack went his best race to date, but had no chanco with Woodchild, who won nicely. r»'l- Progressive Handicap, at u 7 , Pork yesterday, Paddy broke badlv and interfered with na ', osfc hor driver, thus settling what chance of succcss she may hare possessed. . ? r^nco P°pl® came to grief in the handicap at Canterbury Park yesterday, after going four furlongs. He interfered with several of the competitors, thU3 enabling The Whip to S-f? 11 ? a substantial lead, ■which he new long enough to -win by a small irom the fast finishing Harold
Although. Oinako made a slight mis-*; take at the start of the King GcorgS Handicap, at Canterbury Park yesterday, ho quickly got into his stride, and after a good set-to down the straight lasted long enough to defeat (Reggie Huon, who did not pace well in the early stages of the race. Moneymaker, the favourite, had his' chances settled by Reggie Huon putting a foot through his sulky wheel. A. Pringle drove Paul Huon a good race in the Sockbiirn Handicap at Canterbury Park yesterday, and defeated a useful field of fifteen unhopplod trotters. By his success he increased his lead in tho premiership over J. Bryco by two. J. Bryec went through the Canterbury Park Meeting without leading in a winner, in spite of tho strong team which ho presides over. Rothschild was the most'successful siro at the Canterbury Park Meeting. JWoodchild (2), The Whip. St. Kevin, and Emilius won races. Harold XHllon was represented by Klatawah, Oinako and Harold Child. St. Kevin gave a glimpse of his old time form by annexing the Final sHandicap at Canterbury Park yesterday. 3lr Farrell also won this race two years ago with Glendalough. On both occa- ; sions he obtained a good dividend. ! R. W. Franks and T. Annett led in three winners each during tho Canterbury Park Meeting. Their luck was not very good in tho early part of tho - season, "and their successes were well I received. AUSTRALIAN RACING-. BRISBANE CUP. (By Cable—Prces Association—CopyrigM.)
