THE FRENCH ADVANCE

FURIOUS GERMAN ATTACKS

BATTLE RAGES FOR TY.'O DAYS,

The High Commissioner reports: —

LONDON, May 31 (3.15 p.m.). A French official report states: — In the Chninpagrio the enemy at several points attempted attacks, preceded by a violent bombardment with poison shells and heavy guns, north-west of Auberive and Mont lilond. The attempts were arrested by our fire. Ihe German effort was particularly strong at Casque and Mont Haut. It was four times repeated with extreme stubbornness.

The fighting began at 2 o'clock in the morning yesterday, and was prolonged until to-day, when it was broken by firo and with the bnyonet. The enemy waves of assault were thrown back in disorder with heavy loss, but north-east of Mont Haut small parties of the enemy were successful in securing some of our advanced elements.
