Bofore the steamer Alnwick Castlo was torpedoed on March 19th she picked up the crow of the torpedoed steamer Treves, whose sufferings in the boats for a period of nine days in tho_ bitter cold wcro narrated in an engineer's diary. On the third day, tho engineer wrote, the chief cook died of exposuro, and tho storekeeper went mad. On the fourth day the boatswain and a passenger died. On the fifth .day more men died. On the sixth a cattleman jumped overboard and was drowned. On the seventh day two men died of thirst and exposure, and on tho ninth another died. Tho survivors, -when landed, Tvero suffering terribly from frostbite on tho feet, their toes dropping off. One of them died.
