Ifc is not generally known that an Act of Parliament, passed in 1915. provides for tho detention of prisoners fonnd to bo suffering from venereal disease. The procedure is simple. The medical officer of the prison certifies that the prisoner is suffering from a contagious disease, and the prisoner, prior to tho expiration of his sentence, is brought before a magistrate in Chambers, when on proof being given as to the nature of tho disease, an order may ho made for iiis detention, in a prison hospital until certified as cured. The Act applies to prisoners of cither sex. A fen* days ago a malo prisoner, -who was serving a, short term, was brought before Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M.. at Auckland, and committed to Mount Eden prison, which has been 1 gazetted a prison hospital under tho Act until cured.
