•— i LINWOOD. | At the Linwood School Committee meeting | Messrs W. .a. Denton (chairman), Oundry, ] Phillips, Young, McClurg. Coulter, King, and J R. Carter (secretary) \vcr c present. Tho City Council granted. Linwood Park i'or the school picnic on February 10th. It was st "reed to carry out tho wishes of the Bel- « Tan Relief Committee, and appeal for aubscrpitions from the pupils in aid of starving Belgian children. The headmaster (Mr l"'. T. Evans) reported the November attendance as averaging 613, out of Oft) enrolled. Tho increased attendance entitled an additional mistress next year. It was dccided to write to the Board asking for ccrtiiin improvements in tho temporary building. Messrs Gundry and McClurg were apointed judges of scholars' garden plots. It was agreed to present certificates and special prizes °n Wednesday, December 00th, when the school would break up for the Christmas vacation, reopening on" January 29tli. Messrs -k-ing and Gundry wero appointed a visiting committee BECKENIIAM. At the monthlv meeting of the Bcckenham School Committee there v:erc presentr—Mr W. W Charters (chairman), Messrs Bullen, Boon. McAllister, and Carlisle. A very sympathetic motion was passed to Mr Judkins, who has suffered bereavement in the loss of his daughter. Sympathetic reference was also mado to Mr Southcombc. who has beeu the victim of a very severe accident. Mr McAllister offered a prize to cach of tho four boys who produces the largest variety of vegetables, and tho ibest plot of vegetables, and also prizes to tho two girls who keen tho best plot .and show the greatest variety of flowering plants. A letter was received from the Board stating that the schoei had reached tho next higher grade, and was entitled to an assistant master, at a salary of £130 per annum. In consequence, the committee were informed by the Board of their intention to transfer Mr Maguiness to the Richmond School. The committee strongly protested. Mr Ma.£-jinees having' done work in the school. The headmaster's report showed the to!i number to bo 233, and the attendance highly satisfactory. Out of twelve . candidates in the sixth standard who sat for examination ten wero successful in obtaining proftciencv certincatcs. Nine pupils were successful in obtaining certificates in tho Trafalgar Day Essays' Compstition. The manual traininr report from the Christchurch Technical College was highly satisfactory, 26 pupils gaining the .high aver- »£■£, of 71 ner cent, of mark?, and It pupils in th« Domestic Science Clas3 obtaining an average of 7-2 per cent. The conduct of both was pxceUent. It was decided to hold tho annual picnic in February, place and date to be decided later. The brcakinj-un ceremony is to be held on Thursdav, -2,lst" in the evening, when a programme will be given by the children.
