Little has lioen hoard of late l>y the general public regarding tlic bottlecollecting movement, but work iu this direction lifts b'.'Oii steadily progressing. and yesterday at Messrs A. LJJrown and Co.'s auction rooms au enormous collection oi bottles wa? sold by public auction. 1 largo yard adjoining the building was literally packcd with them, stack upon stack, all packed and sorted ready for disposal. Mr J. H. Mcrrett, tlio auctioneer, quickly got to work, and from a representative group of buyers bids were soon forthcoming. Messrs "Ward and Co. purchased most generously, giving as much as 3s Id per dozen for. one lot; of S6f> dozen beer bottles, aji'i in fact this firm secured practically all the bottles of this description. "White whisky bottles realised 2s 3d per dozen, black'wineti Is 7d, brandies Is Bd, with beer and limejuice bottles leading at 3s Id per dozen. In all about 100,000 bottles of various descriptions were disposed of, and the prices given throughout the afternoon were ample evidence of the patriotic spirit of the buyers. An enormous !D.C.L, whisky bottle, several feet in height, was knocked down to Mr .Nat. Vi oods at" os, who gave it back, and it was then sojd and resold several times, realising in all 335. A very, large bottle of sauce, given by Mr Melhuish, was purchased by a prominent citizen, who fiignir'ied his intention of sending it as a Christmas present to the Salvation Army Prison Home. This s&l© closes the seasonpatriotic work of the "Women's Service Corps, who have decided to break up for a brief holiday. At tho conclusion of the sale, Mr Nat. Woods, on behalf of the Lady Liverpool Committee, proposed a very heartv vote of thanks to the liottle dealers for their generous bids, and to Messrs A. E. Brown and Co. and the store staff, who suffered considerable inconvenience in lending their premises as n repository for the bottles. The votes were carried by acclamation.
