GRIT OF THE TOWN GIRL.
WOMEN' ON THE LAND. From different parts of the country come complaints that women farmworkers from London arc tine-weather workers only, and will not. stand the monotony of all-the-year-round work. But Miss Talbot, woman inspector for the Board of Agriculture, f-aid recently to a London pressman:— "There are very many towu girls who have done and are doing splendid work in the country. The girls who ar c not successful arc.those who refuse to take a real interest, in farm work, ;md j who do not understand that, it. is a I matter of national importance that we I should have plenty of farm labourer?, i Frivolous people who cannot tear monotony and who think that work on the land means nothing but sunbeunots and hay-making dishearten the farmers and retard our attempts to find labour.'' The National Land Council sjy that, of the 0000 women placed on the land by them a proportion are town girls—artists. .ictrcfsc-. and daughters of doctors, solicitors, and officers. One girl of l!'. born and bred in London, sent to a large farm. at. the end of tkreo months was made head cow-woman, and she ha* t-.ince, in a more responsible position, trained other women. The experience >,{ the Council is that farmer.- prefer the right sort of town girl, and letters arc constantly being received asking for the same kind of worker?, as country girls do not work in the same spirit,. "lbe question turns not on.the difference between the town and the country girl, bat on the character and grit of pack individual. Care in selection, they say. is all that is needed to obtain highly satisfactory results.
