TO VISIT CHRISTCHTjRCH,

During the proceedings of the annual meeting of tho Philosophical Instituto of Canterbury last evening, tho chairman, Mr L. Birks. announced that a telegram of appreciation had been sent to Sir Ernest Shackleton congratulating him on the success of his venture. Dr. Coleridge Farr, who sent the telegram on behalf of the Institute/ spoke briefly on the subject, and remarked that from all indications there would be a civic reception to Sir Ernest Shackleton when ho viiuted Christchurch about Saturday. "With regard to the Mawson Expedition, Dr. Farr remarked that Dr. Mawson had applied for and received a donation of £300 from the Government, for which he had duly returned thanks. Mr A. Kayo referred briefly to the Antarctic expedition, and expressed tho hope that were a civic reception tendered to Sir E. Shackleton, there would bo a fully representative gathering of citizens present. At yesterday's meeting of the Lyttclton Harbour Board, it was decided that the chairman (Mr M. J. Miller), Mr S. Kaye, and the secretary (Mr Cyrus Williams) should represent the Board on any committee set up to~ arrango for a reception to Sir Ernest Shackleton, who is expected to reach Christchurch on Saturday. Later Mr Kayo and Mr Williams saw the Mayor on the subject, and Mr Holland undertook to , communicate with Sir Ernest and ascertain if a civic reception would be acceptable to him.
