The entry exceeded requirements, and prices declined £1. West bullocks made £18 to £19: extra. L2d: good. £16 to £17 10s; medium. £14 to £15; best cows and heners, £12 10* to £13 15s: extra. £14 10s; medium, to good, £10 10s to £12. Sheep—l2To were penned, the quality being Tiardly equal to tliat at some recent sales. The sale opened with prices equal to last weeks, but thev receded Is towards the nnisii. Prime shorn wethers made 34s to aOs; extra 40s; medium to good, 31s to 335: 'light. 27s to 295: prime shorn ewes. 31s to 335: extra. 355; medium to good, 26s to 295. Lambs.—-Sixty were; p«me<l, and met a "ood s-ale. orices advancing Is to Is 6d. Prime made 27s to 295. and medium to good. 24s to 265. Pigs —Thirtv fats and 35 stores were penned. The. information from London that. thoro has been a'smart advance in lnc ,P n ™ ? £ the shares of the Union Steam Ship Company baa caused no email intoicet in local commercial circle*, and various reasons -which might account for the rise have been put forward (saye yesterday's "Otago Daily Times"). The oft-reiterated statement that the Union Steam Ship Company intends to amalgamate with another company is again officially denied, and tho probable causo of the latest little flatter in Union Steams may bo set down as the result of operations manipulated expressly by persons whoso interest it is to see the market flnctuato na much a» possible. Tho following extract from tho London "Daily Express" of October 6th appears to sum up tho position well:—"The ehaxos of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand continuo to be in etrong demand, and during the past few ■weeks have risen eix shillings. Tho rise hits been .accompanied by all sorts of interesting rumours regarding proposed, combines and working agreements, but probably tho truth ia that tho company, liko so many other shipping concerns, will be ablo to "publish a rery good report in December. The rumour which finds most favour in the house concerns the Ounard Company, which, .it is pointed, out, would have a very direct interest in the Canadian activities of tho Union of New Zealand Company."
