MAGISTERIAL.
(Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) REMANDED. Charged with the theft of £1, the property of John Jones, at Wellington, on October 20th, Lawrence McGuire was remanded until to-day. Peter Dunn was remanded until today week on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl five and a half years of age at Sydenham yesterday. Bail was refused. MAINTENANCE. Charles William Johnson (Mr Donnelly) was ordered to contribute • 8s weekly towards the support of caeh of two children at Wcnwoa. Sidney Sanderson, who was £35 in arrears on an order for the mainteni ance of his wife and child, was ordered to pay off the arrears at the rate of 5s weekly, in addition to paying the original order, in default six months' imprisonment. Rebecca McCain; (Mr Hunt) was granted a separation from her husband, Patrick McCabe. Maintenance was fixed at the rate of £1 per week. DISMISSED. Sarah Grundy, a widow, _wa6 charged that she obtained liquor in the Gladstone Hotel after 6 p.m. on November 22nd. Mr Alpers appeared for defendant. Constable Studholme snid that about 9.20 p.m. on November 22nd, he was standing at the corner of Peterborough and Durham streets when he noticed Mrs Grundy come out of the back door of the hotel. Ho accosted her and she stated that she had "only bought a bottle of beer.'' He took her into the hotel, and asked her to show him where she wag sprved. She took him to the slide and said, "I got served here." The barman admitted this. The licensee then appeared on the scene, and said that she had been served in the passage, and not at tho slide at all, which lie remarked was not an offence. The woman then said that such was tho case. The defendant, Sarah Grundy, said that she had been working late on the night in question, and about 9.40 p.m. she went for sixpoflinyworth of beer. On entering the hotel, she stood in a dark passage between the dining-room and tne kitchen, quite away from the bar, "because it was more private." The barman came out to her, took her ; bottle, and returned to the bar to fill j it. He came back to the passage with lit. and she wa s never near the bar at : all. She had not told the constable ■ that she was served at the slide, i James Young, son of the licensee, | said that he was assisting in the bar i when the woman came in. Ho served ; her in the passage. Neither he nor ' the woman informed the constable that . 6he was served at the slide. i _ Amos Benfield. who was having a drink at the slide when the defendant came into the hotel, told a similar story. j His Worship said that v he could not j convict on the evidence. (rr.KSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) MARTON, December 5. Charles L. Kreegher, of Kakariki, l was committed for trial at the Supreme j Court. Palmerston North, on a charge !of stealing 86 Romney ewes in lamb, ! the property of the trustees of the i Wee toe Estate. Bail was allowed, accused in £'100, and two sureties of £100 each. Accused's brother is also , awaiting trial on a similar charge. ! ALLEGED PERJURY. (rRESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAM.) ROTORUA, December 5. At the Magistrate's Court to-day a Native named Makaruru pleaded not guilty to committing perjury at Rua's trial *by swearing that Constable Skinner fired the first shot at Maungapohatu. He «-as committed for trial at Hamilton, bail being allowed in self £200, and two sureties (Europeans) of £100 each.
