"Ward, of •tiie shore staff of tho South Taranaki _ Shipping Company, died on Tuesday, after an illness of over five weeks. Mr ' Ward, who was fifty-threo years of age, . was born at Holyhead, Liverpool, and J first went to sea when fourteen years of age. x Commenciug his nautical \ carecr in tho Indian clipper ships, hd subsequently, when nineteen years of ; age, came out to Now Zealand in a sailing ship. On arriving in the colony Mr Ward left the sailer, and afterwards entered the service of the Union Company. He worked his way, up and served as an officer on various vessels of that company, including tho Takapuna, Penguin, Rotoiti, Mawhera, Oretu Southern Cross, and Poherua- About twelve years ago tho deceased was appointed 6tovedoro at Wellington for the Union Company, but subsequently accepted a similar engagement from the Shaw. Savill and Albion Company. From the latter employ Mr Ward transferred to his last position, - A widow, a son, and a daughter survive him. Another son was reported "missing" at tie landing at Suvla Bay, and has newer been hoard of since. f Mr R. D. Johnston, who died at Ashburton on Wednesday, was widely known, having lived in tho district from his boyhood. He was formerly an enthusiastic cyclist, and took a keen interest in all kinds of sport. - Ho was a great poultry fancier and breeder, and for a number of years was a most successful exhibitor at the Ashburton and other shows. He -was 43 years of age. )
