CHRISTMAS IN THE TRENCHES.

GIFTS FOR CANTERBFRY SOLDIEMi CLOSING OF "THIB PRESS" LIST. The readers of "The Press" liar® responded nobly to our appeal for subscriptions for Christmas gifts for Canterbury soldiers, as is seen not only by the very handsome sum sent to "Tho Presp" office, but to the still larger total sent direct to tho Lady Liverpool depot from various sources.

The full amoupt required is not yet in hand. Encouraged by the manger in which subscriptions were coming in, the Lady Liverpool Committee cot only extended the value of the parcels, but sent £250 to the officers commanding the Canterbury men in France and Egypt to purchase fresh or canned fruit or vegetables to supply to the men on Christmas Day. They are also sending parcels to the men in Mesopotamia (which have to be posted and will, be expensive). They also wish to provide Canterbury's share for a Christmas dinner for the men in the various camps in New Zealand at time. o Wo propose to close "The Press" lilt J at the end of the present week. Tb# total amount new subscribed, it will be seen, is £876 17s i)d, and we hope to mo this raised to £1000—the total which our readers subscribed last year.

The Lady Liverpool Committee will go on with their good work of sending their regular monthly supply of par*

eels to the soldiers at the front
